INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON HARBOUR CITIES ALONG THE SILK ROADS (FINAL REPORT)
The seminar was conducted from 10-11 january 1991 in Surabaya, East Java Indonesia during the occasion of the visit of the vessel ”Fulk Al Salamah” to Tanjung Perak Harbour, Surabaya from 9-14 January 1991. It was hosted by the Indonesian National Commission for Unesco, in cooperation with the Indonesian Institute of Sciences, the Directorate-General of Sea Culture MOEC, the Directorate-General of Tourism, the Directorate-General of Sea Communication, the Ministry of Information, and the Government of East Java Province, and was sponsored by Unesco. The visit is one of three expeditions being made along the main silk roads which, during their time, were an important means of communication and dialogue between civilizations. The origins of these trade routes are lost in the mists of time, and numerous studies have been made about these great arteries for cultural exchange. To this day, however, no study of an interdisciplinary nature has been carried out by an international team. Unesco is an organization uniquely placed to organize such a study and the Study of the Silk Roads represents one of Unesco's major projects in the World Decade for Cultural Development.
